Addressing the needs of a growing family home, this project looks to reconfigure the rear of the existing house and add a sensitive extension with a contemporary open living area that flows into the garden beyond. The new design places the kitchen at the centre of the living spaces, the extension provides generous dining and summer living spaces, along with a secret playroom and pantry. A downstairs shower room is also added in the carefully considered design.
The use of materials, in particular the white brickwork, along with the proportion of openings allows the extension to be sensitive to the existing Georgian house whilst providing a distinctly contemporary addition. The extension almost acts as a pavilion, opening up to the garden, first through a sheltered terrace, and then stepping down to the lawn. The internal joinery work provides a unique character and a real sense of quality. The use of natural light, alongside the well-insulated, breathable construction, create an extremely comfortable space that further adds to this highly considered, functional and transformative design.
Ourselves and our clients are thrilled with the finished project, and we love seeing the project used and enjoyed!

Sustainable Design
Our primary focus on this project was to look to reduce the embodied energy of an extension project. Commonly in the industry, extensions are formed out of concrete, with cement mortars and chemical insulants, materials that bring with them a high environmental cost. We wanted to use a construction method with significantly less embodied carbon whilst still being affordable and easily constructed by non-specialist contractors. We decided on timber frame construction but instead using timber I-joists (commonly used in roofs) to comprise the wall structure. This timber frame can then easily be filled with soft insulation, saving costs on the rigid insulants often used. It is also a quick method to erect and requires standard site joinery skills. We are really pleased with the results of this method, and we hope to use it on many more extension projects.
The extension is well insulated and provides high levels of thermal comfort. The floor of the extension is insulated with Glapor, a recycled foamed glass insulant. This insulation continues through to the rear half of the existing house to provide additional thermal comfort.
We are really pleased at how this extension has managed to have a significantly reduced environmental cost, whilst providing the construction quality and affordability desired.

"We retained James and Flo from Croft Design Collective just before the pandemic to help us turn a dark kitchen / diner and poorly functioning conservatory into a light and airy functional family living and dining space. We really wanted something sustainable and energy efficient whilst at the same time being more than just a traditional boxed space. We had some other constraints being within the Conservation Area. What the team suggested, designed, and what has since been built, has really exceeded our brief. Through their maximising of light and windows, to the suggestions of innovative and efficient materials we have an extension that is both visually attractive and incredibly functional. We couldn’t be happier and the service we`ve received has been hands on, approachable and proactive at each step from creation to project management. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their services."
