A space designed for contemplation along the woodland trail at the Centre for Alternative Technology, affectionally known as the ‘Hairy Hut’.
Whilst studying at the Centre for Alternative Technology, we placed a high value on getting our hands dirty and building, allowing us to broaden our knowledge of construction. In this hugely rewarding project we worked with over 50 volunteers. The prefabricated thatch facade explores ways to revitalise traditional crafts in the context of the contemporary building industry. Ty Blewog aims to be an ecologically sensitive building. The traditional long straw thatch was sourced within the UK and locally sourced timber was either left untreated, or charred. Old timber brake rails were reclaimed from the quarry for use in the timber frame. Even a double-glazing unit was salvaged from a skip and carefully re-framed.
The space allows for flexible use, whether it’s a shelter for passing walkers, a discrete bird hide, a storytelling workshop, a calm yoga space, or even a cosy camping pod!
